Contra Costa HIV Legal Services Project

The Hawkins Center of Law and Services for People with Disabilities is pleased to announce that legal services are available, free of charge, to individuals living with HIV/AIDS in Contra Costa County. Direct Legal Services will be provided and/or, where appropriate, a specific referral to another legal provider will be made in collaboration with the AIDS Legal Referral Panel. Legal Services* provided include: Hawkins Center staff attorney Nancy Stuart and legal assistant Phoebe Durant coordinate the program and provide services. Referrals from case managers, social workers, and other HIV/AIDS service providers can be made by phoning The Hawkins Center between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. daily. Intake appointments for individuals requesting services will be scheduled at the Hawkins Center in Richmond but will also be made available in Pittsburgh and Concord on an as-needed basis. There may be times when the demand exceeds the capacity to provide services. Priority will be given to individuals who are in danger of homelessness without intervention.

To make a referral, request legal advice, or to schedule an intake appointment, call Nancy Stuart at (510)232-6611. Collect calls will be accepted.

*The Hawkins Center also provides legal representation for individuals whose claims for Social Security/SSI disability benefits are on appeal at the Administrative Law Judge Level. In cases of successful representation, a fee is charged for this service based on a percentage of the individual’s past due benefits.
