What's Out There?

Many people who now have a place to live may become homeless in the coming months as General Assistance (GA) and SSI are drastically reduced. The Hawkins Center has already been contacted by several people who are now homeless due to restrictions placed on the receipt of GA in Contra Costa County.

Organizations that serve the homeless are, like other social service agencies, severely overburdened and underfunded. Shelters frequently have long waiting lists; available beds are claimed quickly. Increasing numbers of homeless people are forced to live on the street, placing both safety and health at risk.

Despite increasing competition for limited shelter space, there is hope. With some persistence you will be able to get into a shelter. The following organizations may be able to assist you if you are facing homelessness:

Contra Costa County

Homeless Referral Line

Richmond Rescue Mission St. Vincent de Paul: 510-439-5060

Alameda County

Berkeley Emergency Food and Housing Project: 510-841-2789

Berkeley-Oakland Support Service: 510-848-3378
